Millennial and Gen Z Specialist Provides Fresh Perspective on Facing Life’s Challenges in New Book, ‘Good Catastrophe’

Pastor Benjamin Windle Shares a Timely Message About the Tide-Turning Power of Hope

BLOOMINGTON, Minn, Feb. 6, 2023 — Offering a unique perspective on hope and adversity, Pastor Benjamin Windle uses the biblical story of Job as a relevant backdrop in his groundbreaking book, “Good Catastrophe: The Tide Turning Power of Hope,” releasing April 18, 2023, from Bethany House, a division of Baker Publishing Group.

We live in a society where sources of hope are few and far between. Over the last two years, we have seen and experienced much turmoil and distress. It often seems like there is no escaping adversity, challenges and emotional upheaval.

“We need to rebrand hope. The era of everything in our lives fitting neatly in a box is done. That world is over,” Windle states. “We need hope—but we need a hope that is robust enough to speak to real life. And cancer. And trauma. And loneliness. I discovered something remarkable. Not only should we have room for hardship—but hope can take our hardest moments and turn them into our greatest growth.”

“People are drowning,” says Windle. “Mental health, cultural upheaval, financial stress, life surprises like sickness or loss… and that’s to say nothing of the global landscape right now. We need a version of hope that works in our messy and complex lives. That’s why the atypical perspective in this book is so transformative.”

Windle illuminates a J. R. R. Tolkien term “eucatastrophe,” which means “good catastrophe” to demonstrate that the greatest good comes from the greatest pain.

“‘Good Catastrophes’ are dual events,” says Windle. “They are the turn that only God can make, where the challenges that almost broke you, brought you to your knees, covered your face in tears, have now become redemptive markers in your life that shaped your values, successes, and breakthroughs.”

Good Catastrophe is a blueprint for people to find their way out of pain. It includes how to deal with anxiety, depression, and the daily problems of life.

“I have 3 sons of my own”, shares Windle. “I can’t promise them a problem-free future. I wish I could. But, I’ve learned something even better. I can show them that hardship and hope together can do something for us that a problem-free life never could. And that’s what this book captures. It helps people see the redemptive hand of God in every storm, imperfection, and crises. Even the smallest measure of hope found in Jesus can carry people through their pain.”
